Having two little Jack Russell’s of my own, I am very supportive of family photos with dogs. Our pets are part of the family, and for most people they are their first babies.
Outdoor family photography sessions are a fabulous choice if you wish to include your four-legged best friend. Although if you want to bring your dog into the studio you are also more than welcome to.
If you are wanting to include your dog/s in your session, most of the locations that family photos are photographed at are pet friendly.
What to bring for your family photos with dogs.
On the day of your photoshoot I recommend foregoing a harness if they usually wear one and bringing a neutral colour lead to clip to their colour. One that is black, brown, tan or grey. Colourful leads are generally quite distracting in your photos.
I also recommended to remove any colourful tags from their collar (like their council tag) just for the duration of the session.
Depending on the spot that we choose for your photos, there may not be water available at the location. So, bringing along some water for your puppies is also a good idea. Doggie treats and their favourite squeaky toy to grab their attention is also helpful for the times that we want them looking at the camera.
Your dog/s knowing basic commands, such as sit, drop etc, do help with the more posed (puppies looking at camera) images. But if they are untrained it is also no big deal. As more candid moments with your dog/s interacting with you are so very beautiful.
When your session includes your dog/s, you will of course still have plenty of moments that are of just you and your children, and of course individual images of your children.
